Review: Cleveland Ladies Classic Putter

Written by  Andrew Wild on Saturday, 14 May 2011

Cleveland's recent line of putters includes their women's Classic Platinum model, a welcome addition to their range of beautiful, sleek clubs. We review the Cleveland Ladies Classic Putter here.

A classic look with a modern edge means that this putter really looks the part, with a platinum finish that will reduce glare from the sun. But it's not all about appearances: when a game comes down to a single putt, you'll be reassured to find that it feels well weighted, solid and responsive.

This is partly because of the computer (CNC) milled face, which allows for a high level of control. I certainly found this to be the case when putting the Classic Platinum to the test - directing the ball with precision felt intuitive and not at all awkward. On impact the face allows for a very satisfying sound as the ball rolls away.

Off-centre hits are well adjusted for by the heel-toe weighting, which means high forgiveness and an increased moment of inertia (MOI). Hitting the ball a little inaccurately yielded surprisingly good results, which is great news for beginners to the game. In fact, I would feel confident recommending this putter to any level of golfer. You're unlikely to get any of the twisting that you might expect from off-centre hits, which means that players with less experience can concentrate on their technique without becoming frustrated.

My one gripe has to be with the alignment aid, which may leave something to be desired for some players. It all comes down to what you are used to using, really.

Personally I found the Classic to be a little tricky to line up properly. That isn't to say that it's inferior to other models, but simply that it's a good idea to take into consideration which shape and alignment system you're most comfortable with.

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to putters - perhaps even more so than other clubs, because they come in such a wide variety - so trying it out first hand is probably the best way to decide on whether or not it's for you.

All things considered, however, this truly is a great putter - especially for the price. If you're thinking about an upgrade for this season, Cleveland's latest women's range comes highly recommended.
