Once you have reached the green, failure to be able to putt the ball can turn a good round of golf leaping towards triple figures on your scorecard.
This TaylorMade series has already been in use for a little while on the professional tour, with 10 players using the putters at the recent Masters, and now they are available for retail.
These putters really do stand out with their glowing white heads with black sightlines and a black insert on the club face. Three black lines on the club head ensure they are easy to align and your aim is correct – the outer sightlines framing the width of the ball to ensure you are centred correctly.
Despite their striking appearance it is probably the insert on the club face that you will be most interested in and TaylorMade's 'Pure Roll' technology. The insert has been designed to get its grooves in contact with the ball to reduce skipping and help the ball roll smoother.
With traditional putters at impact the loft of the club face can lift the ball off the ground, imparting backspin. When the ball lands it can skid before rolling forward. Or if the putter face is too low the ball is driven downward into the grass slowing momentum. In either instance the ball can deviate from its true line. The insert in this putter has been designed to deform on impact, putting the grooves into direct contact with the ball resulting in a smoother roll.
The Tour Ghost putters also incorporate TaylorMade's moveable weight technology (MWT) where small weights in the head of the club can be changed to reach a desired swing weight for custom lengths.
So, does it work? If you already have a TaylorMade putter don't expect to see a massive difference. If you don't these putters provide great feedback, are firm to the feel, and exceptionally well balanced. There is a good reason why they are so popular on the tour.
The TaylorMade Tour Ghost putters replace the Rossa and the stock head weight of the range is 350 grams.
What the Web is Saying
"A breath of fresh white air in a putter world draped in black and silver. It breaks the mold, but in a good way, delivering on its promise of superior alignment qualities. The Ghost isn't for everyone, but it is that rare putter that immediately creates its own niche." - putterzone.com
"Don't be scared off by this putter, it is a very friendly one. It is easy to line up and make putts." - independentgolfreviews.com
"The Ghost, with its white metallic head and distinctive alignment lines, also has that magical ingredient - a positive, firm feel that gets the ball to the hole but without the metallic click which is the hallmark of steel-headed putters." - golfmagic.com
