Product Review: TaylorMade TP xFT Wedge

Written by  Heather McKay on Wednesday, 02 February 2011

The TaylorMade TP xFT wedge features a classic and elegant teardrop head made of stainless steel and covered with a layer of nickel-chrome to provide resistance and durability. The head is milled for precision and includes a pocket where the clubface fits. Thanks to a new technology, TaylorMade’s engineers have designed the face with extreme precision in order to fit perfectly into the milled pocket of the head.

The back of the face is covered with a layer of Poron, a urethane foam which makes the face fit the pocket perfectly as well as reducing vibration. The interchangeable face technology also allows you to choose between two different grooves.

On the course, the face design provides a very soft feel and maximized spin while being extremely workable and resistant.

Each TP xFT features a KBS High-Rev shaft, which is slightly heavier and has a longer area parallel to the tip than regular wedge shafts. Thanks to its additional weight and new configuration, this shaft produces an increased ball spin. Various custom shaft options such as Rifle, Dynamic Gold, Nippon Steel, Project X and KBS Tour are available as well.

As first glance, the TP xFT does not look anything like your classic wedge even though it has a classic looking shape. This is mainly due to the modifications applied to the head in order to make the face interchangeable: the two screws used to attach the face and the cut-through designed to identify the grooves are indeed things you normally don’t come across. This does not mean that the Tp xFT is completely devoid of aesthetic qualities. We found the dark ‘pearl look’ and the circular milling on the face brought a very elegant touch to the overall design.

The first thing we really liked about the xFT (“Exchangeable Face Technology) is the concept of renewing the grooves of a wedge you are used to playing with. Most golfers, if not all, will tell you that once they get hold of something that works, they stick to it, and it is not rare to see even professional golfers keep a wedge with worn out grooves in their bag because they do not want to lose the optimal feel and workability they have developed with it. With an interchangeable face, you can get fresh grooves whenever you want. In other words, you can keep the feel and workability of your club without having to sacrifice spin.

The TP xFT wedge is quieter and provides slightly softer sensations than most wedges. However, we did not find the spin was particularly fast or slow. We found the effect produced by the urethane foam was really interesting: the vibrations are substantially reduced and the feel quite unique. We found the overall performances were very good on the course, with very good consistency and workability.

To conclude, the TaylorMade TP xFT wedges are most definitely worth considering if you’re the kind of player who doesn’t like change. Given that you like the way it performs, you may stick to this wedge forever.
