Review: Cleveland CG12 Wedge Black Pearl

Written by  Sam Reynolds on Tuesday, 26 April 2011

Choosing the right wedge is vital when it comes to low scoring and here we review the Cleveland CG12 Wedge Black Pearl.

As you're approaching the green, you need to use a club that offers high loft with maximum accuracy to perfect those short shots and get where you need to be. Cleveland's range of CG12 Wedge models offer the accuracy and spin control needed for the perfect approach shots.

Despite the modern technology and materials of the club, the Cleveland CG12 has been designed with a more traditional shape that looks great.

Different finishes are available but we highly recommend the Black Pearl club. With its dark satin finish it cuts down on glare when playing in bright sunlight, which can be distracting and have negative effects on your game. The clubhead has been made from forged carbon and steel that lends it a real softness, while added confidence and control comes courtesy of the True Temper shaft.

The CG12 has a notable feature in Cleveland's Zip Groove Technology with 25% bigger than normal grooves. These precision milled grooves channel more debris than traditional designs, resulting in better contact as well as optimising the spin of the ball and giving you that extra bit of distance control that makes all the difference.

The club is forgiving with its back cavity and a wide sole that makes for an easier play on all kinds of lie. The sole proves particularly useful in bunkers and makes it much easier to hit the ball out.

Cleveland have also incorporated a handy system of bounce options in their design, which can be set to Low, Standard and High bounce. This will allow you to customise the club manually to suit your own playing style and ensure that you make the perfect straight shots you need, all the way to the green.

A number of lofts are also available, ranging from 46° to 60°, so you should have no trouble finding a club tailored to your abilities.

Cleveland are known for making great wedges and this latest addition is no exception. It looks good and plays fantastically, giving you all the confidence, control and accuracy required for approaching the green. The range of loft and bounce control will gives it a wide appeal to all players. The softness may cause a slight lack of feel, which could put some players off but this is a minor criticism and the forgiving control presented here more than makes up for it.

With the CG12 Black Pearl you will be dazzled in every way, except by the sunlight of course.
