One of Cleveland's latest clubs is the CG15 DSG wedge, in the distinctive oil-quench finish. Although technology hasn't changed much in wedges throughout the decades, this club is Cleveland's most advanced model to date.
The club face is laser milled with four calibrated lines in between each groove, to optimise the amount of friction between the club and the ball on impact and provide the right amount of spin.
There has been some confusion to date with the 2010 groove regulations, but this model does conform to the latest standards.
It felt well balanced and nicely weighted and with the DSG wedge, standing for Dynamic Sole Grind, the sole's leading edge sits closer to the ground when the face is open, which in practical terms makes for a greater level of versatility from the club. Both high and soft touch shots were easy to play, thanks to this technology.
Although the amount of spin you can achieve with each hit depends greatly on your own abilities, we found that you can achieve some impressive spin with this DSG wedge - making for some great results, especially on chip shots.
The design of the grooves on the face make this club the perfect choice for hitting out of the rough too, as the face traps grass and dirt and puts a much greater amount of spin on the ball than many other wedges we've tried recently.
The finish itself on the club looks fantastic, unusual but under stated, it looks great on the course. Many golfers prefer the oil-quench to the shinier chrome look, especially on sunny days because it drastically reduces glare when you're lining up for a shot.
However, it's worth knowing that it will, eventually, wear and more noticeably than on more traditionally designed clubs. This is fairly unavoidable, and most serious golfers will change their wedge every year anyway, but it might put off golfers who can't quite justify that cost.
In terms of playability, we loved this Cleveland wedge. It's available with a number of bounce and loft options too, so you can really tailor your wedge to your game.
Overall, a beautiful wedge and one that plays very well indeed. The tendency for the finish to wear relatively quickly may put some buyers off, however.
What The Web is Saying
"It felt perfectly balanced and the feel from the Cleveland Traction shaft and the face at impact was excellent and whichever loft you use you will be hard pushed to find a better club from the grass" - golfalot.com
"One thing I’ve noticed is that the laser milled face on the Cleveland CG15 wedges gets scratched up very easily. I had hit only a handful of range balls and there was already some scuffs on the club face." - orlandogolfblogger.com
