Review: Callaway FT-iZ Fusion Fairway Wood

Review: Callaway FT-iZ Fusion Fairway Wood 3.5 out of 5 based on 8 votes.

If you think that extreme weight placement and multi-material technology is generally just for drivers, then you should meet Callaway's FT-iZ Fusion Fairway Wood.

This great looking club, crafted from cured carbon fibre, cast steel, cast titanium and formed aluminium, includes cutting edge technology that is sure to impress most golfers - and it needs to: coming in a long line of Callaway's FT range, it has a lot to live up to.

The shape of the club head has been precision engineered to extremely exacting standards. A chemical reduction process carefully removes unwanted material, resulting in the perfect shape and size for the Hyperbolic Face Cup, and the overall design is geared to be as aerodynamic as possible.

This cuts out on unwanted drag as the club slices through the air, allowing your swing to deliver as much power as possible to the ball on impact. This careful design and manufacturing procedure ensures that you can achieve maximum speed and distance.

Whilst every effort is made to ensure that the FT-iZ Fusion Fairway Wood's head is pared down to the perfect shape and size, this must be balanced out with the correct weighting - and for this purpose Callaway have included their Polar Weighting, to localise the heaviest areas at the front and back of the head.

This, they promise, will give greater consistency throughout ball speeds, as well as good stability. These two features are perfectly complemented by the ultra-thin VFT technology, which increases ball speeds across the entire face of the club through a new face design. And, of course, with greater speeds comes greater distance.

Callaway's Fairway Woods are designed to help golfers break through the distance barrier, so we were eager to get our hands on this model and see if it lived up to the hype. All of the incorporated technologies certainly helped with this - the distance we managed to achieve could rival shots from many drivers, thanks to the stability and consistency provided by the Polar Weighting.

The Fusion Technology, which allows for maximum perimeter weighting, makes for an optimised centre of gravity and a high moment of inertia.

This means that the club feels great and can really do wonders to help improve your swing. We are confident that it would be suitable for any level of golfer, in fact: it would be a great one for those with less experience to start off with, as it provides fantastic feel and stability, yet its ability to deliver impressive speeds and distance would appeal to golfers of a lower handicap, too.

As long as most drivers, the FT-iZ packs a powerful punch, yet we always felt completely in control. We were really impressed with the huge distance we could cover with each shot, and consistently so, too - helped in no small way by the aerodynamic design, which made each swing powerful and straight.

Overall, the combination of power and precision made this club a joy to use in a whole range of different scenarios, and we would recommend it to any level of golfer.

What the Web is Saying

"Performance is everything and we struggled to find fault in that department and we'd certainly rate the FT-iZ as one of the best composite fairway woods on the market today." - golfalot.com
