The Barclays PGA Playoffs turned out to be rather more eventful than expected this year as fears over Hurricane Irene stole the tournaments thunder.

The rain held off for just long enough for the field to complete their third round yesterday at The Barclays, allowing Dustin Johnson to emerge victorious with his first PGA Tour title of the season.

The certainty of the plagued Irish Open, which lost its title sponsorship in November, is being threatened again following the announcement the prize fund is being halved and some of the world’s top golfers are withdrawing. 

World number one Lee Westwood has claimed his second title in two weeks, coming out on top at the Ballantine's Championship with a final push on the fourth round.

With an unprecedented number of Europeans occupying the top spots in the world rankings, it might come as a surprise that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are considered to be the favourites for this year's US Masters.
