Luke Donald was named as PGA Player of the Year yesterday, after finishing his successful season at the top of the money lists in both Europe and America.
Part of the European Tour, the BMW PGA Championship began in 1955 when it was then known as British PGA Championship. Initially contested by mostly British golfers: it wasn't until the 1970s - when players from all over Europe began taking part - that the championship really started to gain status as a top event on the tour.
