Top Ten: Mistakes To Avoid On The Golf Course

Written on Wednesday, 11 May 2011
If you are looking to lower your scores there are some common mistakes to avoid, both on the course and even before you walk to the first tee. We take a look at the Top Ten mistakes to avoid below.

Number one Top_Ten_Mistakes_1
Warm up

Muscles need to warm up to function properly. Take an extra 30 minutes before you play to warm up at the range. Slowly work your way through your clubs starting with the pitching wedge and working up to a driver.

Number two Top_Ten_Mistakes_2 Alignment

Alignment is key when driving. If your alignment is out you will have to manipulate the club to the correct impact position as you swing. Pick a spot one to three feet in front of the ball and ensure the club head is aligned to that point. Your feet should also be parallel to this point.
Number three Top_Ten_Mistakes_3 Take note of hazards Take note of hazards and play safe. Rather than concentrating on hitting the ball as far as you can take note of where the hazards are and ensure that you don't drop a shot landing out of bounds or in a bunker. If there are bunkers on the left play down the right, even if it means losing a few yards distance.
Number four Top_Ten_Mistakes_4 Grip

The correct position of the left and right palms is fundamental for the correct swing. Make sure your palms are neutral and you are not gripping the club too tightly. Imagine you are gripping a toothpaste tube. Squeeze too tightly and the toothpaste will come out.

Number five Top_Ten_Mistakes_5 PostureIf your posture is too curved or too upright your swing will not take its natural path. The ideal posture is to have a straight spine, with your legs bent from the hips and letting your hands hang naturally to the club.
Number six Top_Ten_Mistakes_6 PowerThe key to distance is timing through impact not by hitting the ball as hard as you can. Draw the club back as smoothly as possible and accelerate back through the downswing.
Number seven Top_Ten_Mistakes_7 Yardage Correct yardages are vital. Take your time to work out the yardage as accurately as possible and select the right club to play within your reach. 10 yards short or long can turn a great shot into a poor one and a bogie or worse.
Number eight Top_Ten_Mistakes_8
Play to the centre of the green Play to the centre of the green if the pin is in a tight position. You have more chance holing a putt from within the green than a chip shot from off the green because you attacked an inaccessible pin.
Number nine Top_Ten_Mistakes_9 Visualise the line Visualise the line from the ball to the hole. Rather than look for potential problems with the trajectory of the ball visualise the ball's path to the hole and which is the ideal route to take.
Number ten Top_Ten_Mistakes_10 Don't over swing In order to gain more distance on the green you need to find the perfect posture that allows you to perform a fluid swing - not by putting more into the backswing.
