Top Ten: iPhone Golf Apps

Written by  Paul Gibbons on Thursday, 10 March 2011
Golf GPS technology is moving along quickly. Long gone are the days of pacing around fairways and guessing distances from the markers. The first golf GPS devices were bulky standalone devices like the uPro Golf GPS which cost as much as an iPhone in their own right. Now however, in true Apple fashion, there are a number of Apps which replace both caddy and card altogether. So if you are someone who likes a pencil behind the ear and a card in your hand, then look away now. Here are the top ten iPhone Golf GPS Apps.

Number one Golf_Shot Golfshot: Golf GPS by Shotzoom Software
With no subscription or annual fee you can play over 35,000 courses worldwide. GolfShot has the full suite of features including: rangefinder to the front, back and centre of greens; 40 professionally mapped markers on the hole; GPS aerial view with touch point distance marking and key hazard lay-up points and club selection. The virtual scorecard allows four players to keep track of their round by: auto score calculation (including stableford scoring); round statistics (including green regulation & puts / hole) and automatic handicap course calculator. This App has it all and sets the standard for golf apps.

*Like most of these Apps you must have iPhone 4, 3G-S or 3G with internet connection and require Google maps be available.
Number two Golfscape_Range_Finder Golfscape GPSRangefinder also by Shotzoom software
Developed by the same company, this App provides all same benefits. However it gives you a 3D-augmented reality view of the course instead of the 2D aerial view. It all depends on how you prefer to interact with the course.
Number three Golflogix Golflogix: Golf GPS by GolflogixInc
Golflogix certainly have the pedigree within the golf App scene as a purebred golf company. The main difference with this App is the quality of graphics with real green views. They also boast longer battery life features, important in a four-hour round, and the largest online golfing community. So you can play against and even gamble with other golfers. There are no hidden charges or download fees!
Number four ViewTi_Golf_2010 ViewTi Golf 2010 by ViewTi LLC
This App has a real local touch with 3,000 courses in the UK, including driving ranges and local directions. ViewTi uses the 3D layout with hole flyovers in great detail. This App doesn’t have the same online community but instead focuses on self-improvement by tracking: each shot, club selection and distance for future reference.
Number five nRange nRange Golf GPS by ML Ventures LLC
This App may not get the credit it deserves. Originally a Blackberry App, it has 19,000 courses in its growing database. Despite having all the usual features it’s free and all you really need from an easy to use rangefinder.
Number six Golf_Suite Golf Suite by Intelligentmobiles
This App adds a fun dimension to the broader golfing experience. Including the usual features it also lists golf shops and restaurants nearby, provides a rulebook, includes golf podcasts and lessons and even makes a hole-in-one sound every time you finish!
Number seven OhMyGolf OhMyGolf by iPinWheel With 24,000 courses around the world this App doesn’t have the greatest computing power but comes with important assurances. iPinWheel claim they will add any golf course to their database within two working days and it requires no network connection (courses are downloaded and stored on the device) so your battery will last longer and can be used cheaply abroad.
Number eight WeGolf WeGolf by WeGolf Norway
This App is simple to use and has one of the best user interfaces around. You can play three rounds without charging, create your own personalised website and download courses for free. Unlike other Apps you are not limited to front, centre and back of greens but can choose unlimited markers throughout the course.
Number nine ProCreative_Golf ProCreative Golf 10 by ProCreativeInc
This App has 15,000 high-resolution courses which can be downloaded to view in low-coverage areas. Importantly this App allows you to add courses yourself and set your own markers. It is free to download and ideal for use on smaller courses.
Number ten EZP_Golf EZGpsGolf Pro Golf GPS by mdlRSOFT
This free App provides you with a unique post-round analysis. It allows you to mark your shots and view the entire round on Google Earth afterwards.
When deciding on which Apps to download it is important to first check if your favourite courses are included. It is also a good idea to get a feel for the App before you get on the course, otherwise the group behind could get rather annoyed with someone spending more time on their iPhone than playing golf!
