Top Ten: Beginners Drivers

Written on Wednesday, 06 July 2011

The driver is one of the hardest clubs in your bag to hit and any golfer, particularly a beginner, should be putting a great deal of thought into what to buy. Here Leaderboard looks at its Top Ten Beginners Drivers.

Often beginners avoid drivers altogether, preferring to use an iron or hybrid. Considering the time manufacturers now put into developing clubs suitable for beginners, this is unnecessary. The top ten beginners drivers are below.

Number one Cobra_Offset_Driver Cobra Offset Driver The Cobra Offset Driver benefits from an offset head which produces a maximum draw bias, reducing the likelihood of a slice shot. For many beginners the slice is all too common but with the Cobra S2 you’ll be hitting straighter and longer.
Number two Callaway_Octane_Driver Callaway Octane Black Driver  The Callaway Octane has everything a beginner could possibly want in a driver. Its lightweight construction is great for improving swing speeds, while the club head’s Hyperbolic Face Technology helps to convert off centre strikes into straight drives.
Number three Cleveland_Launcher_Driver Cleveland Launcher Driver Drivers with bigger club heads are considered ideal for beginners due to their larger scope for forgiveness. The Cleveland Launcher Driver has a substantial 460cc head and an extremely large clubface, allowing plenty of room for error on mishits.
Number four Nike_SQ_Dyno_Squared_Driver Nike SQ Dymo2 Squared Driver Don’t let the square shaped head of this driver put you off. It is a great club for the inexperienced golfer. This driver has been specifically weighted at the rear of the clubhead to produce a higher launch, while weight placed deep into the corners of the head give excellent stability and forgiveness on off-centre hits.
Number five Ping_G10_Driver Ping G10 Driver The huge 460cc head on this driver produces a higher moment of inertia (the resistance to twisting as you strike the ball), offering plenty of forgiveness. The weight in the club head has been placed low and far back in order to create a high launch trajectory and straighter drives.
Number six TaylorMade_Burner_Superfast TaylorMade Burner Superfast Driver The TaylorMade Burner’s large head has the biggest club face of any TaylorMade driver. With more area to strike the ball, it really is an exceptionally forgiving club. Lighter, with an aerodynamically shaped head, this driver cuts through the air effortlessly.
Number seven Mizuno_MX700_Driver Mizuno MX700 Hot Metal Driver For anyone new to golf, you’ll be driving straighter and longer in no time with the Mizuno MX700 driver. The club's broader face accommodates a large, forgiving sweet spot. It’s very easy to hit, and has a high penetrating ball flight.
Number eight Titleist_909_D_Comp_Driver Titleist 909 D Comp Driver Although this club is popular with experienced golfers, it has plenty of features that make it a good driver for beginners. With a large, easy to hit clubhead this driver offers improved accuracy. The composite crown creates a lower centre of gravity for a higher launch, really getting the ball airborne. The club uses the same technology as her bigger brothers, the Titleist 910 D2 and D3 drivers.
Number nine TaylorMade_R9_SuperTri_Driver TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver This driver, while suitable for all handicaps, happens to be perfect for beginners. The large clubhead delivers maximum forgiveness on off-
centre shots and has a deep centre of gravity for more height on your drives. The light graphite shaft will have you swinging faster and further. The SuperTri is cheaper than the acclaimed TaylorMade R9 driver and a great addition to their range.
Number ten Mizuno_JPX800_Driver Mizuno JPX800 Driver The 460cc head on this driver has been designed to help improve overall accuracy, as has the increased sweet spot. No matter where on the face the ball is struck the JPX800 gets it flying high and long. The internal weighting system in the clubhead reduces the likelihood of the pull straight left shot - a common problem among the novice golfer. Read a full review of the Mizuno Ladies JPX800 driver.
