Top Ten: Intermediate To Low Handicap Drivers

Written on Wednesday, 31 August 2011

While many say the most important club in your bag is the putter, there is no doubt that the way you drive sets the foundation for how your round will pan out and your overall game will develop. Here we take a look at our Top Ten Intermediate to Low Handicap Drivers.

Number one TaylorMade_R11_Driver TaylorMade R11 When we reviewed the Tour version of the R11 we were very impressed but also struck by just how good the original is. Brilliantly adaptable, it sets the standard for customisable drivers, providing huge distance, great shot-shaping ability, and forgiveness in one.
Number two Yonex_Ezone_420cc Yonex Ezone 420cc  Leaderboard Pro Graham Green said the Yonex Ezone drivers were the best on the market and they pushed the R11 all the way. A perfect blend of technology and adaptability, with three different head sizes and different shafts. The 420cc is the ideal blend of distance, workability and reliability.
Number three Callaway_Diablo_Octane_Black_Driver Callaway Diablo Octane Black  When you hear that two of the biggest names in performance engineering - Callaway and Lamborghini - are collaborating you should expect great things. But the Diablo and its tour version exceed expectations with immense distance and superb performance away from the sweetspot.
Number four Titleist_910_D2_Driver Titleist 910 D2 The 910 D3 is better suited for absolute top end golfers but we went for the D2 because it combines adjustability and precision with more forgiveness. These adjustable clubs are more subtle than the R11 but bring the best out in your game. They are also just edge out the Diablo Octane for the best looks award.
Number five Callaway_RAZR_Hawk_Driver Callaway RAZR Hawk Another Callaway-Lamborghini collaboration and almost as good. Lightweight, it cuts through the air and crunches the ball down the fairway, but they also provide plenty of shot-shaping. Also comes in a Tour option for the more advanced player.
Number six Nike_Golf_VR_Pro Nike VR Pro In terms of sheer customisation this driver, and its 32 settings, cannot be beaten. The range of adjustments might be best-exploited by the very low-handicappers but with the low centre of gravity, sole channels and a large sweetspot, intermediate golfers will seriously benefit. And Leaderboard are due to review it soon.
Number seven ping-g15-driver Ping G15 Simpler to look at than the alternatives on this list and simpler to play with. Ping offers custom fitting when buying the club, but there is no way of adjusting it according to the conditions when on the course. With the forgiveness and sheer distance it provides we doubt you will mind.
Number eight TaylorMade_Burner_SuperFast_2_0_Driver TaylorMade Burner Superfast 2.0 Incredibly light and aerodynamic, as you would expect from Taylormade (watch the video review), this club is all about generating speed. Sends straight hits out a mile and provides plenty of distance even when you don’t connect with the sweetspot. The feel is very responsive. A great ladies’ option is available too.
Number nine Nike_Golf_Machspeed_STR8-Fit_Round_Head Nike Golf Machspeed STR8-Fit Round Head Far superior to its square-headed counterpart, this a club as serious as it’s imposing, all-black appearance. Aerodynamic, powerful, adjustable, the round head is also nice and workable. The woman’s equivalent is fantastic too.
Number ten Callaway-Golf-Big-Bertha-Diablo-Driver Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Tour This driver has been around for some time, and has been overtaken by the other two Callaways on this list, but it is still a fantastic club. Distance, workability and a large sweetspot, this club has them all.
